ZnPT is widely used in personal-care products such as anti-dandruff shampoos and EDTA improves stability in shampoo formulation. The speculations in of ZnPT due to the presence of EDTA was analyzed by measuring MSP content in fresh water fish plasma. Comparisons between two combinations of shampoos containing ZnPT alone and ZnPT and EDTA, were established. Plasma MSP concentrations were not measurable from 0.5 hrs to 8 hrs after treatment with shampoo containing 1% ZnPT, and from 0.5 to 8 hrs after treatment with shampoo containing 1% ZnPT + 2% EDTA. This composition is speculated to increase ZnPT absorption and the resulting increased toxicity in aquatic organisms.
